Should You Follow Colour Trends? A Simple Guide for Handmade Sellers

Link shop page below

If you’ve ever scrolled through Instagram or Etsy and thought, Should I be making everything in this year’s “it” colour?—you’re not alone! Colour trends come and go, and as a handmade seller, it can be tricky to know whether to jump on board or stick to what you love.

Here’s the good news: you don’t have to follow every trend to be successful. But knowing when to embrace them (and when to ignore them) can help you make smarter colour choices for your products.

So, are colour trends worth it? Here’s a simple way to decide:

1. Do your customers actually care about trends?

Not all buyers are trend-chasers! Some love classic, neutral homeware, while others actively seek out bold, modern colours. If your customers are the “timeless and neutral” type, they might not be interested in neon pink just because it’s trending.

Tip: Check what colours are selling best in your shop. If customers consistently buy soft, earthy tones, you don’t need to ditch them just because a magazine says cobalt blue is “in.”

2. Can you introduce a trend without changing your whole style?

You don’t need to redo your entire product line to stay “on trend.” Instead, consider adding one or two trend-inspired colours into your collection alongside your best-sellers.

Example: If warm, spicy tones are trending but you normally work with neutrals, try adding a soft terracotta or muted rust rather than jumping straight into bold oranges.

3. Will the trend last longer than a few months?

Some colours stick around for years (hello, sage green!), while others fade fast (remember millennial pink?). If a trend feels like a fleeting moment, it might not be worth investing in.

Tip: Look for colours that feel fresh but still work well with your existing style. That way, they won’t feel outdated when the trend moves on.

The Best Approach? A Mix of Trendy & Timeless

A good balance is having a core collection of colours that feel true to your brand while experimenting with small trend-inspired additions. That way, you keep your shop feeling current without constantly chasing fads.

Final thought: Trends come and go, but a well-chosen colour palette can make your products feel timeless. Follow trends when they excite you, but don’t feel pressured to change what’s already working!
