How to Use Your Pigments
HOW TO USE YOUR PIGMENTS
For Jesmonite® AC100, AC300, AC730, and other plaster/gypsum-based eco-resins or cement (NOT for epoxy resin).
-
How much pigment should I use?
- Extremely concentrated—15 ml can colour well over 30–40 coasters.
- Keep to a maximum of 2% pigment by weight of total mix (e.g., 20 g pigment per 1 kg of total mix for a strong, saturated colour).
-
How do I use the pigments?
- Shake the bottle well (at least 30 seconds) before use so the blended colors recombine.
- Always mix the pigment into the liquid component (Jesmonite® or polymer liquid) first.
- Once thoroughly combined, add the powder component.
- Mix thoroughly before pouring into your mold. Insufficient mixing can result in a mottled effect.
- Do not add the pigment directly to the powder or mold.
- For marble or ombré effects, prepare smaller amounts of different shades and combine in the mold.
- For terrazzo effects, create different coloured “chips,” let them set, then add them to a fresh mix.
-
How do I get different shades?
- Vary the concentration of pigment.
- For pastel tones, start with a tiny amount (e.g., a toothpick tip).
- For deeper colours, add pigment one drop at a time until you reach the desired shade.
- It’s easier to start light and go darker—once a colour is too dark, you can’t lighten it without starting over.
HOW TO SEAL YOUR PIECES
- Protect your INTERIOR Jesmonite® or plaster/gypsum eco-resin home decor products with my “Finishing Touch 100% Natural Coconut Oil & Soy Wax Sealer”.
- This should make your final colour slightly more vivid and add a lovely sheen.
- It adds a splash proof protection but is NOT 100% waterproof or dishwasher safe.
- Not for use on outdoor products or candle containers
